Lieutenant Colonel Miguel Teixeira Soares de Sousa Pereira was the patriarch of one of the richest and influential families in São Jorge. He was the father-in-law of the Viscondessa.
He embarked on a military career, later becoming a councilman and mayor of the town of Velas.
Although he had sided with the liberals during a period of contentious politics, he was murdered by the very troops that he supported while heading back home one day to his Terreiros estate.
